At bear me in mind, your safety is our top priority. Rehoming second-hand teddy bears and soft toys is a great way of shopping sustainably. This makes our teddy bears and soft toys eco-friendly.
What's just as important as shopping for sustainable soft toys and teddy bears? Safety.
You'll notice that most of our sustainable teddy bears and soft toys will have a CE (Conformite Europeenne) or UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) label. These labels mean that:
- the toy meets essential safety standards for flammability, chemicals and mechanical properties
- it's been tested to ensure it is safe for children according to EU (CE) or UK (UKCA) regulations
- it complies with Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (CE) or the UK equivalent.
When you see one of these labels, it means that the toy has passed official safety assessments required for new products sold within the UK and EU.
What if a toy doesn't have one?
Some of our bears and soft toys don't have a CE or UKCA label. This doesn't mean they are unsafe. But it does mean there is no proof that they have been tested under current toy safety regulations. Examples of some of these could be vintage or handmade. Or, if the teddy bear or soft toy has been loved before, the previous owner may have cut the label off, so it's likely that the toy has been tested, but we aren't able to prove this.
In these cases, we will clearly state that there is no CE or UKCA label. This will mean that they:
- are not suitable for children under 14 years old
- are not intended as toys for unsupervised play
- might be best suited as collectible or decorative items
